Let yourself expand

  • Notice, right now, how you’re sitting or standing (or lying down).

What’s happening around your mouth and jaw? Are you holding on somehow?

What about shoulders, neck, hands and feet – is there a stiffening or clenching, or holding your breath?

Just notice without trying to alter what’s happening – but you might find that noticing in itself softens and eases things.

Give yourself a moment to observe yourself.

Expansion is our natural state – that easy, soft, breathing expansion that we see when a cat or dog or a baby is asleep (substitute mammal of your choice!).

Imagine a rubber or foam ball – one of those stress toys. Imagine squeezing it so it’s under pressure. And now let it go – it expands, springs back. That’s what we do if we let ourselves.

Just for a moment, hold the thought: my body knows how to expand, how to spring back, how to release tension and come back to a calm state.

You don’t have to do anything else – but you might notice your breath softly releasing, your shoulders dropping, more of a sense of your bottom on the chair and feet on the floor. More space in your mind.

When you have a moment, between things, try remembering that you can expand.
